Music News Nashville Reviews “Remembering”

“It’s a performance that he flat out nails! I think a lot of people will call the name of Chris Cook over the next few years! He’s got the ability to be a lot of things to a lot of people, and I bet that’s going to pay off!” -Chuck Dauphin

North Carolina native Chris Cook definitely has a little something for everyone in his approach to music. I have not heard an album in a while where the artist experiements with so many different styles, yet makes them all work as a cohesive project.

Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange Reviews “Remembering”

“Blowing away expectations is what they call it…” -Bob Gottlieb

This weary voiced troubadour from North Carolina, by viewpoint is from the South, and his music encompasses a fair portion of America. He isn’t afraid to mix things up and garble what you think should be happening, muddling your mindset. Blowing away expectations is what they call it, throwing banjos into the mix when the dominant instrument is a fuzzed up rock guitar, Heartless Road. This disc has rudiments of Rock, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Folk, and R&B well integrated into his songs; upon occasion they will pretty closely fit into one genre except for that small iota that makes you pause, and think. You know what they say about thinking? It can cause clarity and result in intelligence.

R2 – Rock’n'Reel Reviews “Remembering”

“a songwriting masterclass… Cook proves to be a huge talent.”

The distinctive, soulful vocals of North Carolina songwriter Chris Cook and a talent for killer hooks combine with his innate storyteller’s ability on “Remembering”, a beautifully crafted collection of observations, recollections and ruminations -and a songwriting masterclass. Supported by some top-notch accompanists and drawing on country, blues, soul and old-school r’n'b, Cook proves to be a huge talent.

Maverick Reviews Chris Cook’s Remembering

“Between A Rock And A Romance sounds like a Tom Petty song sung by Kris Kristofferson and Heartless Road could easily find itself on a Tim McGraw or Brad Paisley album…” -Alan Harrison

4 Stars

Chris Cook • REMEMBERING • Tree O Records

Chris Cook from North Carolina has been a regular visitor to the UK for a few years now and has steadily built up a large fan base that will love his latest offering. The songs on REMEMBERING are very well-written and, in the best country tradition, all tell a good story. Couple this to Chris’ world weary, slightly gnarled voice and handsome good looks you’d think this would be a guaranteed bona-fide hit record; but the World doesn’t always work that way, which is a shame.

My favourite songs are the slow love songs, which suit his voice like a well-worn leather glove and I keep going back to Get Over The One, which harks back to my own lovelorn teenage days and the mandolin led Growing Up which just avoids entering ‘Grumpy Old Man’ territory as the singer looks back on an eventful life and wonders‘what if.’

Chris Cook can also rock-out when he feels like it and Between A Rock And A Romance sounds like a Tom Petty song sung by Kris Kristofferson and Heartless Road could easily find itself on a Tim McGraw or Brad Paisley album and fill Cook’s coffers from the radio plays it would gain. The same is true of the swinging and retrospective The Boy I Used to Know which is a real showstopper and will probably close his concerts for years to come. I’m new to Chris Cook and after listening to REMEMBERING for a few weeks now; I’m a convert and look forward to seeing him play live some time soon.  -Alan Harrison
